Well……it has been years since visiting Heidelberg and I have to say I absolutely love this little city. The cobbled streets with a view to the old castle on the hill, Christmas markets all around with many people out participating in the season. Students everywhere, clean streets, controlled traffic, Starbucks, no dog poop everywhere, ice skating in the town square, and everyone very festive and in the Christmas spirit! It also helps to be able to communicate a little better here – my German is coming back to me and it has been fun to use it when I can. Of course, everyone speaks English but I like to give German a try. We learned a lot from our tour guide about the history of Heidelberg as well as the structure of government in Germany. All countries have their pros and cons but I am thinking this would not be too bad to live in this lovely little university town. We spent most of the day there – and we climbed the cathedral tower of course. The weather has been warm for this time of year – mid 40’s – and pretty dry. Although tired, we walked into the little town of Speyer after our bus got us back to the boat from Heidelberg to take a look at their Christmas Market and see their cathedral. We happened to arrive at the church in time for a concert of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Once back on the boat we dressed for dinner and the after dinner entertainment was the boat staff singing Christmas carols. These Uniworld people are great and if anyone ever wants to do a river cruise they are the ones to go to!
